Community Street Banner Program 2011 "Thinking Green"
The Banner Project
Banner Winner 2010 Michelle Reed
The City of Whittier Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department and the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation are seeking artists to participate in the eighth year of the Community Street Banner Program. Local artists of all ages, school children and organizations are asked to submit scaled down drawings for consideration to be painted onto banners.
Entries will be reviewed and selected by the Whittier Cultural Arts Foundation. Artists whose drawings are chosen will be given a banner on which to paint their artwork in acrylic paint onto one side only. Completed banners will then be hung throughout the City. The back side of each banner will have the Foundation's logo and contact information, highlighting its commitment to this project and other programs that bring the arts to the Whittier community.
The images are two of the banners that were submitted for the "Best of Now and Here" banner program in 2010.
This
banner project has several goals, the first of which is to make the
arts a part of everyone's life by exposing the general public to art on
a daily basis. This project takes art out of the gallery and the museum
and places it out in the open for everyone to see, from children on
their way to school to commuters on their morning drive to work.
We
feel that the banner project creates community through the arts and
provides local artists with the opportunity to display artwork in a
public forum, while also placing art in that public forum so that the
community can easily appreciate it. The project allows artists to take
ownership of their community and improve it with their talents.
Residents, visitors and businesses are educated about the arts and its
ability to bring people together, to strengthen the local economy and
to encourage thoughtful expression from the community.
It
is our feeling that art begets art, and that this program can be one
that interests citizens and causes them to participate in other
cultural events and programs in the community. Because of the
accessibility of these banners, we hope that this program will
encourage families, members of the business community and visitors to
discover other cultural arts programs offered in Whittier.

Scope of Project Work
The theme this year is THINKING GREEN. "Going Green" has become a way of life and art can be a way of renewing the desire to help save our environment. Artists are encouraged to be creative in their interpretation of this year's theme.

Once artists' designs are chosen, they are provided with a vertical banner measuring 30 inches by 104 inches or 24 inches by 60 inches (mote:there are two sizes for the banners). The banner shall be painted on ONE side with acrylic paint. Painting supplies are not provided.
