Boys & Girls Club – Professional Series

Funds will pay for talented guest professionals in the areas of dance, theatre and art, from the surrounding communities to give educational lectures, demonstrations and participatory classes for the Club members and the public. This series will be held eight times per year

Daniel Phelan School

Funds will pay Ray Mendez to provide grade level appropriate art lessons to K-5 students at the school. The, “Art Attacks” program will be used as a basis for a systematic approach to teaching techniques and artistic styles to students.

Floricanto Dance Theatre Navidad in Whittier

Funds will be used to aid in the presentation of Navidad en Whittier, a program at the Shannon Center scheduled for December 13, 2009, that celebrates holiday traditions of Mexico and increases awareness for the arts within the Whittier Latino community.

Mill School Technology Academy

Funds will be used to pay Elizabeth Lauritsen for violin lessons for kindergarten students. There are three kindergarten classes that will receive 20 1-hour violin lessons.

Rio Hondo Symphony Association

Funds will be used to provide “in the classroom” introduction to symphonic orchestra instruments. Rio Hondo Symphony instructors go into 4th and 5th grade classes to present a 45-minute lesson to a maximum of 60 students in Whittier and East Whittier City Schools.

Sorenson School – Meet the Masters

Funds will be used to purchase the curriculum for the “Meet the Masters” art program so teachers will have the necessary training and skills to teach 465 students that art is meaningful and purposeful.

Whittier Art Association and Gallery

Funds will be used to provide 16 scholarships to students taking fine art painting and drawing classes at the Art Gallery.

Whittier Union High School District

Funds will be used for the “Arts Alive” program in which three schools (California, La Serna, and Whittier High Schools) attend 4 field trips each and one school (Sierra Vista High School) attends 2 field trips to art museums and musical or theatre productions. Funds cover the cost of substitute teachers and transportation.

Hoover School

Funds will be used to pay for two buses that will be used to transport students to and from an art exhibit/musical production. (This funding is conditional.)

Pioneer High School- The Cypher Project

Funds will be used to purchase art supplies for the program and create two of the four murals that were suggested. The murals are intended to be painted along the Green Way Trail on private businesses to help beautify Whittier. (This funding is conditional.)
